I believe that many people know what a “TATAMI” is, Don’t you?

Tatami is a type of flooring used in a Japanese style house.

But do you know “why Japanese are using tatami in their house?” And do you know “what are the good points of tatami is?

Here, I will explain the tatami’s effects and advantages.

1. Safety and comfort

It has good cushioning effect as it can reduce body damage when you fall over on it. Therefore, it is much safer for people especially who are more likely to get hurt for example children and elders. Nowadays, tatami is also used for bedding in Japan to prevention from aches while you are sleeping.

2. Temperature control

Tatami maintains a comfortable room temperature at all times. During summer it shuts out the sun heat, on the contrary it works as insulation in winter.

3. Humidity control

It controls room’s humidity. When the room gets dry, humidity will be released. Each tatami can also absorb 500cc of water.

4. Atmospheric purification

It absorbs carbon dioxide and transforms it into harmless carbon monoxide. If your home has tatami, it purifies the air for a nicer atmospheric environment inside your room and house!

5. Long durability

The reason why tatami has a long life duration is due to its material, “rice plant straw” called Inawara in Japanese.

Shoji is one of the popular parts in a Japanese house which is used mainly for window framing. It has been used since the Heian Era. It is made of wooden frame with Japanese paper (sometimes called “rice paper”) and partitions inside and outside.

What does shoji give us?
Why do people like it?

1. Prevention of harmful sun rays

Shoji paper has the ability to reduce the amount direct UV rays of the sun and disperses the sunlight. Therefore, shoji provides enough light into the room which creates a warm and calm environment.

2. Well-humidity and ventilation control

It can control room humidity while it has a ventilation ability. It is suitable for a Japanese environment (high temperature and humidity).

Japanese garden is one of the famous cultural traditions as it impresses many people by experiencing a beautiful Japanese nature into the garden.

Japanese garden can be classified into 2 groups:

Kaiyu shiki teien(回遊式庭園)

日本庭園This means “pond and plant garden.” It is designed for taking a walk and to enjoy the natural environment.

Kare san sui(枯山水)

日本庭園This garden consists of rocks and sand without any plants. It is also known as a dry landscape gardens which is commonly used for meditation.

What is the interesting view of this garden is, such as Ryuanji, one example of karesansui, has a rock garden containing three groups of stones, seven, five and three stones respectively. However, if you sit in front of the garden, you cannot see all stones, which shows the beauty of imperfectness!

It is interesting, isn’t it?
